In 2007, eight sober home operators established the nonprofit Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing. Legislation in 2014 created voluntary certification of Massachusetts sober homes, and MASH began managing voluntary statewide sober home certification in 2016. Massachusetts sober houses are certified by the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing, or MASH. We understand that transitioning from sober living to independent living may be difficult.

Sober living is a great way to force guests outside of their comfort zone which helps create change and healthy sober connections. Sober living also has the necessary structure for someone in early recovery. Guests are required to follow certain rules and commitments on a weekly basis which helps them create a routine to build a foundation for their recovery. Sober living has a “House Manager” who oversees the home to ensure each guest is moving forward with their recovery along with making sure the home is a safe place clear of all drugs and alcohol. There are meetings held in the home on a weekly basis which helps create a brotherhood among the guests and to engage guests on their recovery.

South Middlesex Non-Profit Housing Corporation, Worcester, $14,750MassHousing grant funds will help rehabilitate 19 single-room occupancy units of affordable sober housing for women at Pax House in Worcester. During that time, it became abundantly clear there was a tremendous need for treatment for women who suffer from addiction, which led to a decision in 2009 to pursue a career in the  substance abuse treatment field and help women recover. The challenges I faced were also met with people who saw potential in me and helped me to start my journey.
